What kind of work does an IT Business Analyst do?


We all know, at the time of this era, the Business Operations can’t run without IT. Besides the basic Office applications, various IT solutions are needed for fulfilling different Business Objectives, e.g. enhancing the working efficiency.  The IT solution could be, e.g., consolidating the information for collaborative work.

In order to fulfil the IT needs of Business, a Bridging role would be needed to deal with Business Stakeholders, IT domain experts, Vendors and sometimes even the Organization’s external Clients. We call this Bridging Role, the IT Business Analyst, who will be active from the moment when Business raises the request till and after the solution is implemented. Having an competent IT Business Analyst in an organisation is one of the success factors for a successful IT Project.
His or her daily work  could be one of the following activities but not limited to:
  • Engage with the Business Stakeholders to find out why Business needs an IT solution, and what exactly Business needs.
  • Liaise with  IT domain experts to find out what current IT landscape can provide and allow for the IT solution
  • Guide the Business and IT stakeholders to evaluate and select the best-fit IT solution
  • Contact the various vendors for Solution proposal, including pricing and support information
  • Verify the Solution functionality during the Implementation
  • Oversee the Business needs for the future

In a word, an IT Business Analyst can experience a lot of various Business and IT challenges in an Organisation. Tough but Fun!
